The Larimar stone is a relatively new find that was discovered in only one spot in the world: in the Dominican Republic which is situated at the island of Hispaniola, in the Caribbean Sea.
The famous turquoise gem stone - which is also called ´Atlantis stone´ or ´Dolphin stone´ - was originally discovered in 1916. However the Spanish priest, who found the stone by coincidence, did report about his find but unfortunately no mining was done. Therefore it took again more than half a century until in 1974 the Larimar jewel was finally rediscovered. A team of explorers that consisted of the Dominican, Miguel Mendez and the American citizen who was at this time a Peace Corps Volunteer, Norman Rilling, found Larimar at the beaches of Barahona.
These two were so amazed by the soothing blue shades with it´s white patterns that in their view resembled the sunlight dancing beneath the Caribbean Sea. This inceptions also led them to the naming of the stone. They knew right away the name should include the Spanish word for ocean (which is ´mar´). To make the name complete the first few letters of Mr. Mendez daugher´s name were added (´Larissa´) which resulted in the melodious sounding name LARIMAR.
